The Quirkiness of Wireless Broadband

The area that I am living now, could be categorized as rural area. It’s almost 60KM to KL. With no landlines, I had to rely on wireless broadband. But it was still frustrating. Download speeds were averaging 100kbps, sometimes even lower. It was like being back to the dial-up connection days.

And then today, I decided to try someting different. I opened my bedroom door. Then I checked my speed.

My download speed is not more than 800kbps. :D

Wonder if I can get higher speed if I sat outside the house?

Love thy books

Next to the garden, the thing that illicits the loudest *gasps* of surprise from any of our guests as they enter our home is our bookshelf. The sheer size of it is enough to make jaws drop. The bookshelves are really an important extension of our family.

Our six tier bookshelf. Plus six huge drawers for the other books that may have silverfish :P

Growing up to parents who are both teachers, they can never stress it enough to all of us on the importance of books and reading. In fact, my dad who still teaches at IIUM can never understand the students’ internet researching “culture”. It’s no use telling him about how international journals are now all online, or how useful wikipedia is, he just simply cannot be convinced. “Why can’t you go to the library and do some proper research?” he would always argue.

And to a certain degree, I do agree with him. University students nowadays are so dependent on the net that they cannot even comprehend the thought of some good old library research. When I did my thesis in my fifth semester, I automatically sought out the journal section in our library. I spent half of the day searching thorugh dusty and some never before used journals, and photostating every journal that was relevant to my research topic. Later, some students found out that lecturers has made it compulsory to get journals from the library, they were all faced with a serious dilemma. They turned to look at me, “Err…so where is the journal section?”

Being the nerd that I am, I have been to a few libraries myself. In fact, we used to take weekly trips to the local library in Kajang. (For the uninitiated, it used to be at Bangunan Da to’ Nazir, or now more popularly known as Kajang Satay Haji Samuri) We spent hours looking for that perfect book to borrow. (Children below twelve were only allowed to borrow two books) And we had a lot of fun. So much fun that some books never got returned. :P But one of the best libraries I have been to is without a doubt the one in UiTM. They have such a massive collection of books. References, Fiction, non-fiction, dictionaries, encyclopedias, and magazines. Sadly, the books are only borrowed when an urgent assignment needs to get done, or when a lecturer insists on the class to get a particular book. The books are sullied and torn, when  irresponsible souls are too lazy to photocopy the page. And it was truly painful to see books being treated that way.

The other thing that got to me during my university days was also how quickly the students were able to dispose of their textbooks. Immediately after the final exams, you would be able to see notices everywhere, selling textbooks to the juniors that will be taking the same subjects the following semester. I took great care to especially purchase the original textbooks, (some costing more than RM100) and only photostated the ones that I could not seem to find in the bookstores. And I still have them today, adding them to my growing collection of books. The retort I get when I chide people for selling their textbooks were, “I’m not going to use them anymore after the exams, why should I keep them?”

I don’t believe for a second that any book is indispensable. They each carry with them its own wisdom and purpose. Amongst out massive collection of books is my dad’s basic economics textbook from when he was in secondary school. It’s thin, and in paperback, and heavily dog-eared. And yet, as I flip through the book, I am amazed at how I remembered seeing the same graph in a recent class, and how much more easily it was explained in my dad’s old and humble textbook.

Our old Americana encyclopedia set, although somewhat obselete in some of it’s content, still manages to entertain me to this day. Look up under ‘comics’, and you’ll find out just how old the comic strip “Blondie” is.

A favourite book I read when I was in preschool was Shirley Temple's autobiography. Sadly, I don't get to see many of her movies.

In a nutshell, treasure your books, and open up your horizons. Don’t be too caught up with the latest bestseller list. There is a whole world out there, with many many books waiting to be read. Indulge them…get away from the internet once in awhile.

We’ll see each other in dreams

Well see each other in our dreams

We'll see each other in our dreams

It’s been almost a year since my beloved Teddy died. I still find myself missing him terribly. We had Tom, for more than ten years, and Teddy for no more than three years, and yet I find myself missing him more than Tom. I wonder why…

Maybe it’s because Teddy was more affectionate.

I have a stack of Calvin and Hobbs stashed somewhere, and one of the Sunday strips that matters to me most, is this one. Bill Watterson dedicated it to his cat, when she died. And I think for true cat lovers, it will totally relate to them.

There are times when I still can’t get used to him not being there. Like when I come home, and somehow, at the back of my mind, I’d hear a forlorn mioaw, calling me.

It’s eerie. But its telling on just how much I miss dear old Teddy.

A Wishlist

A wishlist…how cliche, and yet, how wonderful it is to have all this stuff! Come November, I would have been working for five months, and although I have made a few key purchases with whatever I have left after I have spent on bills, it is no where near satisfactory. And though I realize that I may well be far more privileged, and it isn’t like me at all to be indulgent, I can’t help but to covet for these stuff!

One of the first on the list is the Nature’s Minerals foundation by Bodyshop. True, I have perfectly good ones that my mom has bought for me from Clinique and Maybelline, I can’t help but want one of these. First of all, it is loose powder. Which is key to perfectly oily skin like mine! Second, I love the idea of using a daily foundation that is light and filled with minerals instead of the usual cakelike feeling I get from the usual compact powder. The only problem is that it costs RM99. -_- And this is without the applicator, which is another RM99. Bummer…

But who knows…*might* be getting a salary increment sometime soon. So I just might cave-in and get it!

But before I can actually start to wear decent nakeup, I just have to clear my skin up. I would’nt say that my skin is breaking out too much, but it does it some help, as I have been neglecting it for some time now. Work+procrastination has had a very bad effect on my skin, and it needs help! After surverying the market, and at the risk of sounding Bodyshop crazy, I have decided that Bodyshop’s Teatree range is one of the best for me right now. Bodyshop is on the pricey side, but I think this is going to be good investment on my part.

Third on my wishlist, is a new purse. But a departure from the ones that I usually get, this time I plan to get one that has a chain strap with it. Honestly, I can get so tired of carrying handbags sometimes, and since my (fairly) new W880i, I have a handphone that can easily fit in with all the cash and cards in a nice slim wallet. Another good plus is that Baby would stop bugging me to carry his wallet in my handbag! I like this one from Fendi, which I know I can’t possibly afford. Oh well…I probably could after many months of starvation and saving up, but I am just not that type of person, so I’d settle for a cheaper imitation that I saw at MNG.

Of course, this is all on top of the many other long term items that I wish I could own, such as a DSLR, new laptop and a PDA Phone.

Well…baby steps huh? :D

Finally!

I am blogging from home! After months of scouring the market, I finally came to the conclusion that all wireless internet was either too expensive, or too inefficient. But because I am faced with no other option, (since there are no landlines in my area!) I had to get one of them. So this afternoon, I subscribed to Maxis Broadband!

So far, so good. averaging 3.6Mbps. Great for browsing so far. Although I don’t think I’d be streaming series or downloading movies anytime soon.

But it’s exhilarating to be able to  use the internet on my own desktop at home! Cause then, I can fully utilize my wireless ergonomic Microsoft keyboard and mouse!

Now I can blog all I want!

The Forgotten Anniversary

We were having dinner last night, when suddenly my dad looks up from his food in a state of shock. Slowly he turns to his wife sitting next to him.

“Do you realized that you have forgotten something very, very important?” he says.

“Is it the sambal belacan? Do you want me to get some?” she retorts.

“No, something really, really, REALLY important!” he stresses.

“What lah??!” My mom now on the brink of suspense.

“We’ve forgotten our anniversary!”

Oh dear.

Their anniversary was two days ago! In the crazy schedules that we keep, none of us have remembered. On the 19th of October, they have been married for 24 years.

My mom mused later as they cuddle in front of the television after dinner. “You know, this year’s anniversary is rather significant. I am 48, which means I have been married to you for exactly half of my life.”

My dad can only grin happily.

Hehe, Happy Anniversary Papa & Mama!

Of Desks and its Owners

I get bored really fast. Which is why in the course of choosing a theme for this blog, poor Baby had to change it close to eight times. I think more. I’ve decided to stick to this theme for a while though, as changing themes would not only trouble Baby, but change the dynamics of navigation and eye movement as well.

To keep it feeling fresh, I decided to change the stuff that is lying on my desktop in the banner above. Currently it’s on default of course, and doesn’t really reflect what is on my desk. I want it to show books that I am currently reading, as well as music I am listening to, and trinkets on my desk that I feel deserve their moment in the sun.

In compiling ideas on layout and content of the desktop, I stumbled upon another blog that I thought was very interesting. On my desk is a blog where designers and artists from around the world submit photos of their desks. An interesting concept, especially when one would always wonder what goes on behind the scenes.

I’ve always had a thing for desks. Which was why I LOVED Jk Rowling’s website.  It’s looking at the small things which tells a lot about it’s owner.

I shall have a lot of fun creating my own desktop graphics!
