Song

Being all grown up puts into perspective the stuff that you went through as a teenager. I wish as I could say that I was only a teenager last year. But being 24, that was a good 4 years ago. Yikes!

I didn’t have that much going on when I was a teenager when it came to boys. Except for Baby, I never really had a boyfriend. But like any other normal girl in highschool, I’ve had my own share of ups and downs when it came to boys.

I think I’ve always been a romantic person…but a pragmatic one. Oxymoron, I know, but there it is. I could make up all sorts of things in my head, but when it came down to it, I knew this guy or that guy just wasn’t the one for me, because we had hardly anything in common. Teenagers don’t usually think of that. They just look for the most physically attractive one, and hone in.

I used to stay up till late at night, making up conversations, writing poetry, planning when to “bump” into him. And then, when it all doesn’t work out, I’d just curl up in bed, and listen to the soppiest of songs, and immerse myself in tears.

Kid stuff…I know.

But now and then, one of those soppy songs gets played on the radio, and for some inexplicable reason, it takes me back to that vulnerable state, when boys broke your heart, and people can be mean. It’s been years since all those has happened, and I guess I’ve grown a rather thick skin.

But there’s something about certain songs that just transports you back. I mean, how many people can listen to Boyz II Men’s “End of the Road” and not reflect on that first time someone dumped you. For me, that song has always been this song. Faith Hill’s “Let me let go”.

How Am I Supposed to Live Without You

I saw this Grammy performance a long time ago when my parents purchased the laser disc titled “Greatest Grammy Moments”. As the Grammy producers get more and more pressured to attract the younger audience, the annual Grammy awards have become quite a circus, with too many embellishments and unnecessary fanfare. If it’s all for the purpose to celebrate good music. The music itself should be sufficient I say.

Gone were the era when beautiful music is showcased. Today, it’s all about the presentation and of course…cleavage.

p/s – say you want about Micheal Bolton, but he remains to this day, the man with the sexiest voice ever!

Where did the years go?

Where did the years go when I used to have a crush on Devon Sawa, and watched Saturday morning cartoons without a care in the world?

Where did the years go when I used to ride Foh Hup buses for cross country practice and left bread out for the squirrels in the quiet afternoons?

Where did the years go when I used to borrow library books and struggled with mechanical pencils?

Where did the years go when I used to trudge inside secondary forests, and pretended to cook weeds by the tiny creek?

Where did the years go when I used to catch the rabbit that escaped the neighbours pen and kept it hidden in my laundry basket?

Where did the years go when a tall wardrobe looked like adventure and the end of the road was a mystery to me?

Where did it all go.

I miss my innocence and childish dreams.

Miss Your Mechanic?

I stumbled upon this great Youtube documentary about a local run-of-the-mill mechanic workshop. The story tells about a man and his wife manning the workshop, it’s history, to the simple tools that they use around the shop.

I see shops like these everyday, and can’t help but wonder the hardships they go through to make a living. It makes one appreciate the seemingly mundane everyday tasks.

Take some time to see the video below.

A Campfire Memory

A twang of the guitar,

A cough in the distance,

A familiar face across the space,

Something crackles in the fire…

A song,

Smiles,

Laughter…

Etched in memory.

Hehe…updates on my convocation soon!

Currently listening to…

Jason Mraz has always been my favourite. His latest album “We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things” is making waves everywhere. Bear in mind that this is only his second album. It took him a long time to produce one after the success of his first album. (Which I happily bought the original without a second thought) He’s current single is “Lucky”, a duet with Colbie Caillat, which still features his signature folksy tune.

My favourite is “I’m Yours”. I saw an interview of Jason Mraz on V Channel, and it was infectious the way he talks. One of the few truly passionate and optimistic musicians I have ever seen. And one of the videos that was playing while he was being interviewed was him singing “I’m Yours” live with the camera angle from behind him. You could see everyone singing to the song with him and just his guitar. Goosebumps lehh….

Check out the song below in case you haven’t heard it yet. (Where have you been? It’s been playing everywhere!)

Note: If it wasn’t for the lack of roadside garbage, I would have thought that he was chilling in Malaysia!

David sings to Mariah’s tune!

Everyone gets confused when it comes to song covers. You’ve listened to the original so often before, have hummed it, have seen the video, have basically identified that song to belong to the artist who sang it in the first place. Some songs though, have been covered by different artistes so many times, that one could hardly remember the original version anymore. Songs like “Heaven” by Bryan Adams, or “I will survive” by Aretha Franklin, or “We will rock you” by whoever it was that orignally sang it.

Most songs that are covered sounds almost exactly like the original, which really…isn’t very original. If you have to cover a song, make it sound so different, that it becomes your version that people would like better. Enter David Cook singing Mariah Carey’s ‘Always be my baby’.

That was my favourite song by Mariah Carey. Ever. But now I almost prefer the David Cook version. :P
